Beginner's Choice - Clarinet

YCL-255S Clarinet

Ideal for Beginners

Classical or Jazz? With a long, important history in both musical worlds, there's a lot to explore when you learn the clarinet - and our YCL-255S is the perfect model to begin your journey with.

Yamaha YCL-255S Clarinet

Our custom and professional level clarinets are usually crafted from wood; a wooden body tends to give a warmer, richer tone with the wood resonating with the air within it. But, both the material and the skill required to shape it are costly and usually outside the acceptable budget for a beginner. Wood can also be affected by temperature and humidity - and whilst a veteran clarinetist will intuitively compensate for any resulting fluctuations in tone or timbre, those variances can become a source of frustration when you're starting out.

So, for our YCL-255S, we chose to cast the body from 'ABS Resin' - essentially a high-grade plastic which offers durability, consistency and affordability. It also allows us to subtly shape the clarinet body for optimal tone and appearance - adding a resonant chamber in the bell and simulating wood grain in the outer matte finish, for instance. The result is a clarinet that both looks, feels and sounds remarkably similar to our professional wooden models - but at a beginner-friendly price and with the consistency in performance and response that's vital for every beginner.

Why it's great for beginners:

  • Careful shaping of the ABS resin body creates a sound very similar to the tone of a wooden clarinet
  • High-quality craftsmanship ensures keywork performs consistently, whilst the ABS body isn't affected by normal variations in temperature or humidity - so intonation is predictable

Good to know...

  • Rather than blowing directly down the body of the clarinet (as you would with a recorder or tin whistle), the sound of the clarinet is made by causing the wooden reed of the mouthpiece to vibrate which in turn causes the internal air and body to do the same
  • Reeds come in different guages (or 'strengths'); for a beginner, the YCL-255S comes with a reed to start with (usually a strength 1 1/2)
  • Unlike a flute or piano, where a 'C' note matches a universal reference (or 'concert pitch') 'C', the clarinet's notes are usually shifted down in pitch. On a 'Bb Clarinet' like the YCL-255S, playing a 'C' note will give the pitch of a 'Bb' (B flat). This isn't anything to worry about (and your teacher will likely explain in more detail).
