Chris Allen: Piano Teacher

"I started to gain an interest in playing the piano at the age of 17 after hearing Winifred Atwell play The Black and White Rag on a 78rpm record at my grandmother's - my grandmother then bought me a piano and it changed my life.

"Playing piano gives you a whole lifetime of enjoyment and I love it more every single year. I studied classical piano for a few years until I discovered Mrs Mills and Scott Joplin, then I found a teacher able to show me what was then called 'syncopation'. My fascination with this type of playing is as strong now as it was 30 years ago but I also enjoy delving into the world of the Masters. I regularly play in a wedding band and a progressive rock band - I'm always playing, but never tire of it!

"If I can sum up the joy of the piano in one sentence I would say that I have never regretted one second of learning to play and it remains the single most important and enjoyable part of my life!"
