Hi Alexis, thank you for your question. All of our YFL-200 model flutes are made to the same high specification - the model numbers denote differences in styling or operation:
- YFL-212: Has covered keys, an offset-G, a Split-E mechanism
- YFL-222: Has covered keys, an offset-G (no Split-E mechanism)
- YFL-262: Has ring keys, an offset-G (no Split-E mechanism)
- YFL-272: Has ring keys, an offset-G, a Split-E mechanism
- YFL-282: Has ring keys, an inline-G (no Split-E mechanism)
So the YFL-212 and YFL-272 are identical except that the YFL-212 has covered keys which are easier to use (especially for beginners who are still learning finger positioning) whereas the YFL-272 has ring keys which require more finesse and accuracy. Ring keys can sometimes be difficult for young children whose fingers can't always physically cover the keys; at the same time, ring keys can offer an experienced flautist more exact control over tone (as you're able to control how much of the key you cover).
For a beginner, the YFL-212 is the most popular.
