Question: Hi I am looking for a microphone for a teenager who wants to sing along to his favourite tunes, but also wants to be able to play it over speakers and possibly perform. We have an ipad; what do you suggest?
Answer
The iRig Mic is a great low-cost iOS compatible microphone; used in conjunction with an iPad and external speakers, it's possible to use the microphone live (be wary of microphone positioning as it's easy to create feedback).
We'd suggest pairing the iRig Mic and iPad with a pair of our HS Series monitor speakers. These offer superb sound quality and can be used both for listening to music and producing music in the future:

There are alternative options for both live and recording use which will give far better sound quality or capability...
For a better live microphone sound:
Many vocalists swear by Shure's legendary SM58 microphone (link below). This could be paired up to a small PA system, such as our StagePAS 400i which also allows you to directly connect your iPad to play backing tracks through the speakers. This would cater for performances in small to mid sized venues, or for practicing at home between performances.
For a better studio vocal sound:
The iRig Mic and Shure SM58 are 'dynamic' microphones - these are ideal for live use (and for just having fun) but they don't capture all the nuances and detail of someone's voice and won't give the vocal sound we're used to hearing on studio-produced music.
For that crisp, detailed studio sound, you generally need a 'condenser' microphone. These are far more sensitive, capturing all the details of a voice. RØDE's NT1 condenser microphone is one of our favourites, for sound quality and value for money. Usually, you'd use a condenser with a pre-amp, mixer or audio interface - our compact AG Series mixer/interfaces are iOS compatible, allowing you to record or play back from your iPad.
Again, we'd suggest using the NT1 microphone and AG06 mixer with our HS Series speakers.
